Biography
Chester Clause appears on the September 1934 ILD roster of Kentucky miners imprisoned after the Harlan labor struggle. It places him at Frankfort penitentiary under a ten-year sentence and lists a wife and six children. The roster establishes confinement, but not the individual statutory count, admission, discharge or actual total served. The surname is retained as printed. Labor Defender, May 1934: The current-prisoner roster gives manslaughter as the charge and a ten-year sentence. Clause’s accompanying letter says his family lacked necessities and could give him little material help in prison. This supplements the later September roster without assuming ten years was actually served. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/labordefender/1934/v10n05-may-1934-orig-LD.pdf#page=17
