Biography
Charles Rowoldt was a German-born Minneapolis worker and former secretary of the Hennepin County Workers Alliance. Immigration authorities arrested him on November 26, 1948 and later released him on conditional parole. They rearrested him on March 18, 1952 and held him until a $4,000 bond was posted on April 4. The Supreme Court overturned his deportation order on December 9, 1957, finding the evidence of meaningful Communist Party association insufficient.
Contemporary reports disagree on the day of his February 1936 arrest: the Daily Worker of February 8 dates it to the previous day’s eve (February 6), while its February 19 report gives February 5. The February 8 account places him in Hennepin County Jail with bond set at $1,000, accused of affiliation with an organization distributing literature advocating governmental overthrow. The conflicting arrest days remain unresolved.
