Biography

Charles Hoelscher was an Edwardsville unemployed-workers activist and Daily Worker seller. Page 1’s August 7 dispatch says he was jailed July 17, 1934 on an accusation of advocating overthrow of the government, brought by Fred Simms of the Illinois Workers Alliance. He was actually released from Madison County jail on August 3 on $1,000 property bond. The article attributes the prosecution to hostility toward his militant organizing. The recorded interval is seventeen elapsed calendar days between the explicitly stated jail entry and actual bail release, not a nominal sentence.
