Biography

Charles A. Poole, a Catholic WPA worker, was lured from a Detroit beer garden May 12, 1936 by Black Legion men promising membership in a baseball club. The September 16 trial report describes him taken instead to a lonely road near Dearborn, confronted by seven men with an accusation of beating his wife, and shot dead. The article treats the accusation as a pretext and places the killing in the Black Legion’s anti-Catholic terror. This is extrajudicial seizure and killing, not a court sentence; the complete period under the abductors’ control is unmeasured.
