Biography
Cecil Shadrick was a Harlan-area coal miner indicted for murder in the frame-ups that followed the 5 May 1931 Battle of Evarts and the Kentucky coal war, held awaiting trial in the Harlan County Jail.
The September 12, 1931 Daily Worker includes this name in its Harlan murder-indictment list and describes the International Labor Defense’s preparations, including Franklin Reynolds and Leo Gallagher and challenges to alleged planted testimony. The list establishes the reported prosecution, but supplies no additional individual admission, discharge, conviction or completed custody total. Mrs. Charles Shadrick’s December 30, 1931 letter individually names Cecil as her son then held in Harlan Jail and indicted for murder, while her husband and oldest son remained in Winchester Jail. This is a dated family observation of existing custody and a reported charge, not a finding of guilt or proof that Cecil first entered jail on December 30.
