Biography

Page 1's November 6 Pineville account of the Dreiser hearings identifies miner Caleb Powers, father of six, as threatened and jailed several times for collecting food for starving miners' children. Judge Jones reportedly offered freedom if he abandoned union activity and left the county; Powers refused. The article reports blacklisting and continuing threats. It does not individually date or separate the reported arrests. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1931/v08-n268-NY-nov-07-1931-DW-LOC.pdf

Contemporary original newspaper source; individual page evidence retained in review audit 884. Exact individual custody dates and duration are not inferred from relative dates or collective claims.

Titler says Caleb and Finley Powers were arrested shortly after the August 10, 1931 bombing of the Evarts soup kitchen and charged with banding and confederating. He describes them as unarmed guards who had been restarting the kitchen fire. The memoir does not provide the exact arrest day, discharge date or completed custody duration. This adds a specific attributed incident to Caleb Powers's documented Harlan food-relief imprisonment without assigning dates to his other confinements.
