C. M. Nelson was sentenced to two years in prison. He served in Moundsville Penitentiary from September 13, 1918, to April 2, 1920.
The presidential-clemency table in the 1921 Senate amnesty hearings records a sentence imposed August 13, 1918: Two years in the West Virginia penitentiary at Moundsville. Commuted March 3, 1919 to one year and one day. A pardon, commutation, nominal expiration or parole eligibility is not itself evidence of the day of physical release; the imposed or reduced term is not a measured time served.
