Biography

Marshall identifies Morris as a former Illinois judge and Chicago lawyer arrested in November 1864 and confined at Camp Douglas. He and his wife Mary were taken to Cincinnati in December and held at McLean Barracks. Morris was tried by military commission on accusations of conspiring to release Camp Douglas prisoners and destroy Chicago. The account reports acquittal and discharge after approximately six months. Its precise arrest-day statement is internally inconsistent with its election chronology, so no exact day is assigned here. Source: John A.
