Biography

An Attica prisoner known as Brother Flip gave a September 10, 1971 speech advocating communication, humane treatment and solidarity during the uprising. Tom Wicker’s eyewitness account, reproduced on pages 25–26 of Project NIA’s primer, describes his speech and embrace with observer William Kunstler. His full name and underlying conviction remain unidentified. He is not merged with unrelated environmental protester Phillip (Flip) Templeton. This profile documents political activity during actual imprisonment, without claiming the original conviction was political.
