Biography

Bobby Talbert was a student involved in the southern desegregation movement. The December 19, 1962 Student Voice reports his November 24 arrest during the Nashville SNCC institute’s restaurant sit-ins, describes his confinement in the county jail, and dates his release to November 26 when the charges were dropped. The report attributes allegations of assaults by a bystander and police to the contemporary account. It also identifies his earlier expulsion from a McComb high school for an August 1961 anti-segregation demonstration, not an independently established earlier imprisonment.

Individual physical custody is established by the report; warrant, offense, arrest, trial and release dates are not interchangeable. Unnamed demonstrators are not assigned this person’s custody history. No race, gender, date of birth, age, portrait or organizational taxonomy value is inferred from a name, appearance or membership. The historical account is not a claim of present-day detention.
