Biography
Bill Caudle was a fifty-one-year-old textile mill night watchman and union organizer in Lumberton, North Carolina. After he joined the National Textile Workers Union, armed men threatened him and his family and demanded that they leave town. Caudle defended his home and later faced a pursuing crowd with a revolver. The sheriff arrested him on weapons and assault accusations and took him to jail. The International Labor Defense arranged his legal defense and secured his freedom. He later recounted the attacks and his imprisonment to writer Grace Lumpkin.
