Biography

Bill Ayers was a Black worker active in the New Orleans labor movement. The Daily Worker of January 4, 1932, page 3, reports his arrest for selling and distributing literature, with charges of inciting to riot and being a dangerous and suspicious character. Police fingerprinted and photographed him, subjected him to questioning and insults, and threatened violence unless he left town. Fellow workers obtained his release on bail. The article alternates Ayers and Ayres; neither the exact arrest/release day nor a final disposition is established. This 1932 New Orleans worker is distinct from the later Weather Underground organizer Bill Ayers.
