Biography
Betty Rufalo was a vice president of the Newark Teachers Union. The participant account The Anatomy of a Strike confirms that she waived appeal and served part of a contempt sentence arising from the 1970 strike. It reports less than one-third of the sentence served; exact custody dates and actual duration remain unverified.
The Anatomy of a Strike names Betty Rufalo among Newark Teachers Union officers convicted of contempt on February 26, 1970. It reports a six-month sentence with three months suspended, a $500 fine and one year of probation. The booklet later says she waived appeal and actually served less than one-third of her sentence, and an individually named caption shows her being taken to Essex County Penitentiary to serve it. The fraction does not establish an exact duration, and the booklet does not supply her actual admission or release dates. No day or month counter is inferred.
