Biography
August Klapprott was a German American Bund leader associated with Camp Nordland in New Jersey. Federal authorities held him during wartime criminal proceedings while a separate denaturalization case proceeded by default. His subsequent challenge reached the Supreme Court in Klapprott v. United States, which allowed him to seek relief from the default judgment. He was named in the January 3, 1944 Washington indictment alleging conspiracy to undermine military loyalty under the Smith Act. The mass trial ended in a mistrial on December 7, 1944. The indictment was dismissed in December 1946; no conviction resulted in this case.
