Biography

Aubrey Bronson was a Black juvenile inmate of Cheltenham Reformatory in Maryland who was shot by a white prison guard identified as Hurley. A January14 Baltimore dispatch in the January15,1935 Daily Worker says the shooting exposed whippings, clubbings, bread-and-water punishments and forced labor at the institution. The International Labor Defense began a campaign for dismissal and punishment of the guard; former inmates supplied affidavits and an Abolish Cheltenham Committee sought abolition of the conditions. These allegations are attributed to the contemporary report. Bronson's original admission grounds, exact age, shooting date, injury outcome, admission, release and complete custody duration are not supplied.
