Biography
Artie Adanandus was seventeen when Richmond, California, police shot him in the back while arresting him on September 13, 1972. Adanandus, Clarence Peters and Forrest Blade had given two white hitchhikers a ride from Berkeley toward San Francisco; after the women later alleged kidnapping, police charged the three young Black men with attempted rape, kidnapping and robbery. The Black Panther described the prosecution as a racist frame-up. Adanandus was hospitalized after the shooting. The available report does not establish how long he remained under guard, whether he was booked into jail after treatment or how the case ended.
