Biography
Arthur Lipe was a member of the Federal and State Aid Association in East St. Louis. The Daily Worker, October 31, 1934, page 3 reports that he was arrested during an effort to stop an eviction, held under $20,000 bail and released after twenty-seven days through public pressure and International Labor Defense assistance. The paper identifies association official and deputy Claude Broshears as the arresting person; its allegations about Broshears remain attributed to the report. The charge, institution and exact custody dates are not supplied.
Page 3 dates Lipe’s seizure to August 22, 1934 and reports $20,000 bail for inciting to riot, assault with attempt to kill and interfering with an officer. The underlying eviction of Mrs. Checkan, a war veteran’s widow, occurred in June; June is the eviction month, not a supported jail-admission date. Claude Broshears arrested Lipe and was also president of the Federal and State Aid Association, in which Lipe advocated militant relief and anti-eviction policies. The later twenty-seven-day release account remains separate from any inferred exact discharge date. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1934/v11-n206-aug-28-1934-DW-LOC.pdf
