Biography

Arthur Kelly was a cigar-strike protester arrested after the July 26, 1934 demonstration outside the T. E. Brooks cigar plant at Red Lion, Pennsylvania. The August 10 York dispatch in the Daily Worker of August 11, page 3, names him among two strikers held for trial on rioting and attacking-an-officer charges. It reports that police used tear gas and clubs on a demonstration of about 3,000 and says defense evidence of a peaceful gathering was disregarded by Alderman Paul Shive. These are the newspaper's account and defense position, not an acquittal. Seven other defendants were discharged and fifteen further cases awaited hearings; those outcomes are not assigned to Kelly or Hitz. No final disposition, release or full duration is supplied.
