Biography
Aron Gilmartin was a Socialist, secretary of the Labor Defense Committee and chairman of the Tampa Defense Committee. The May 26, 1936 Daily Worker reports his arrest on Saturday, May 23, while investigating terror against Southern Tenant Farmers Union members in Crittenden County, Arkansas. He remained jailed on the May 25 dispatch date. He was trying to obtain release of thirteen unnamed Black strikers held in an armed plantation stockade. The May 27 follow-up, page 2, confirms actual release on $150 cash bond by its May 26 dispatch and reports that Sheriff Peacher slapped his attorney. The sources describe the charge as interfering with, or disturbing, labor. They do not establish the exact release day or complete custody total.
