Biography

Archie Gibbs was a twenty-two-year-old seaman and member of the Marine Workers Industrial Union who served forty-two days in the Norfolk, Virginia jail in 1931 for distributing leaflets calling young workers to a Young Communist League meeting. Put in solitary and hauled before a prison "kangaroo court," he was given twenty-five lashes.
