Biography
Archie Gibbs was a twenty-two-year-old seaman and member of the Marine Workers Industrial Union who served forty-two days in the Norfolk, Virginia jail in 1931 for distributing leaflets calling young workers to a Young Communist League meeting. Put in solitary and hauled before a prison "kangaroo court," he was given twenty-five lashes.
The September 1 Norfolk dispatch describes his arrest while preparing interracial Marine Workers Industrial Union organization for the Atlantic Coast Longshoremen’s Conference. Carrying a pocketknife was prosecuted as concealed-weapon possession. It reports thirty days in jail and a $25 fine, with another thirty days if unpaid, and an ILD appeal. These are imposed and conditional terms, not proof of complete service. This 1930 episode differs from the separately recorded 1931 leaflet case.
