Biography

Anna Harkoff chaired the Sacco-Vanzetti meeting at Avella, Pennsylvania where her husband George Harkoff and Steve Mina were shot in August 1930. The Daily Worker of September 1, pages 1 and 3, reports that the gunman also fired at her, that police then held her at the police station for hours, browbeat and threatened her, and raided and searched her house. At the miners’ funeral she pledged to continue the working-class struggle. One passage prints her surname Markoff, while the shooting and police-hold passages identify Mrs. Harkoff and Anna Harkoff. No criminal charge, sentence, exact detention day or discharge time is provided. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1930/v07-n210-NY-sep-01-1930-DW-LOC.pdf

The August 26, 1930 account places the shooting at the Avella Sacco-Vanzetti meeting on August 22 and describes police arriving at the scene, locking Anna Harkoff out of her home, and taking her with her three children to the squire’s office. She was surrounded and interrogated about Communist and union activities. The article separately reports prior strike arrests without enough detail to manufacture dated cases. Existing hours-long custody wording and unknown final endpoints are retained. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1930/v07-n205-NY-aug-26-1930-DW-LOC.pdf#page=4
