Biography

Andrew Turner was a Black truck driver from Chester, Pennsylvania, and a member of the Trade Union Unity League. He drove for Headley Storage Company. A motorist struck the rear of his truck and died, and Turner was charged with second-degree murder. His defenders argued that his employer had failed to provide a rear light for the truck. He was held in Freehold, New Jersey, on $3,500 bail and remained jailed after a grand-jury hearing in January 1930. International Labor Defense attorney David Levinson sought a writ of habeas corpus to secure his release.

Turner is identified as a Black Chester truck driver and TUUL member held in Freehold, New Jersey on $3,500 bail on a second-degree murder accusation after a fatal truck accident. The ILD retained David Levinson. The January 24 and January 30 reports differ on how many weeks earlier the accident occurred, so neither is converted into an exact arrest date.
