Biography

Andrew McCloud, a twenty-six-year-old Black farmer, was arrested Saturday, July 7, 1934 in Bastrop on suspicion of an attempted assault on a white woman. The July 10 dispatch says a mob took him from the parish prison the preceding night, July 9, and lynched him. The continuation says the woman could not identify her attacker; the accusation is not treated as proven. The account alleges official complicity. July 9 marks removal from jail into a fatal mob attack, not release to freedom. Exact admission time and complete measured custody duration are not stated. Daily Worker, July 11, 1934, page 1. The July 12, 1934 Daily Worker editorial “The McCloud Lynching” reports that Andrew McCloud, a young Louisiana farmer, was lynched on Monday night. Monday was July 9, 1934, corroborating the July 11 account already cited here, which dates his fatal removal from the parish prison to the night of July 9. The editorial alleges complicity by Attorney F. W. Hawthorne and Sheriff Carpenter; those allegations remain attributed to the newspaper. July 9 records his death, not release to freedom. This account supplies no jail-admission time or complete measured custody duration.
