Biography

Andrea Salsedo was an Italian worker imprisoned in the United States Department of Justice building during the 1920 anti-radical raids. The January 2, 1930 Daily Worker anniversary account says he was arrested around the beginning of March and held for eight weeks before his body fell from a fourteenth-story window on May 3, 1920. It disputes the government’s suicide explanation and alleges torture; those claims remain attributed to the newspaper. The reported eight weeks is an approximate narrative duration, not an exact calculated custody total. The precise initial arrest day and criminal charge are unestablished. The Militant’s Sacco–Vanzetti retrospective reports eight weeks of incommunicado detention at the Department of Justice offices in New York before Salsedo’s fatal fall on May 3, 1920. It reports that Elia was deported before he could testify. These are attributed retrospective statements; no precise admission date is calculated from the rounded eight weeks.
