Biography

Alph Minter was a Black farmer with small farms in Orange and Chatham counties, North Carolina. The January 2, 1932 Daily Worker reports that authorities held him in Pittsboro for twenty-one days the previous fall after a white tenant accepted a ride in his wagon. According to the account, sawmill owner Bill Cheek demanded a lynching, while the woman refused pressure to accuse Minter of rape and was also jailed. Authorities ordered both out of Chatham County without trial. Minter lost his mules and crops and sought help to return safely; the woman is not named.
