Biography
Allen Kellogg Philbrick was a Harvard junior and secretary of the National Students League. Police arrested him aboard the German training cruiser Karlsruhe at the Charlestown Navy Yard on May 15, 1934 after he dropped anti-Nazi leaflets during the swastika-flagged goodwill visit. Boston’s police intelligence unit interrogated him, and he was held overnight. Authorities released him on May 16 after requiring him to waive any false-arrest claim when no federal marshal appeared to take the case.
Page 1's May 16 Boston dispatch prints Allan Philbrick, secretary of Harvard's National Student League. Arrested aboard the German cruiser Karlsruhe for distributing German anti-Nazi leaflets, he was held overnight without charges while local authorities consulted Washington, then actually released following detective interrogation. The spelling variant is attributed; the May 15-16 custody already recorded is corroborated, with no extra day or new case.
