Biography
Alfred Thomas was 18 when Cleveland police arrested him on July 23, 1968 after the Glenville shootout. He was detained in the Cleveland City Jail and indicted on August 25 on seven counts of first-degree murder, eleven counts of shooting to wound and a machine-gun charge. A court found Thomas incompetent to stand trial and committed him indefinitely to Lima State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. The reviewed sources do not establish his discharge date or a later trial.
The November 1969 Movement report identifies this July 23 Cleveland defendant as actually detained. It distinguishes the defendants’ prosecutions from separate contempt sentences imposed on supporters; no aggregate contempt term is assigned to this individual. Alfred Thomas was arrested at 9:30 a.m. on July 24, 1968, according to the contemporaneous federal study Shoot-Out in Cleveland. Its account places him at 12314 Auburndale on the morning after the gun battle and names him among the three people arrested there. The study does not establish the date of his actual admission to an institution or his eventual release.
