Biography

Alfred Sarant was an American electrical engineer linked by decrypted Venona messages to Julius Rosenberg’s Soviet intelligence network. The FBI questioned him after Rosenberg’s arrest in July 1950. Sarant then fled through Mexico with Carol Dayton, reached Czechoslovakia, and moved to the Soviet Union after about five years. Using the name Philip Staros, he became a prominent engineer in the Soviet electronics industry. He was never tried in the United States; the archival identification and his flight are recorded separately from a criminal conviction.
