Biography
Alfred Hoffman was a United Textile Workers organizer at Marion, North Carolina, where striking workers were shot by the sheriff and his men. A Raleigh bulletin dated August 20 in the Daily Worker of August 21, 1930, page 1, reports that the North Carolina Supreme Court overturned Hoffman’s conviction while affirming the Gastonia defendants’ convictions. The source does not give Hoffman’s statutory charge, initial arrest, physical jail confinement, original sentence or discharge day. The appellate ruling is recorded as a prosecution outcome and is not treated as proof of a prison release or a completed custodial duration. He is distinct from the much younger 1961 civil-defense protest defendant Allan Hoffman. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1930/v07-n201-NY-aug-21-1930-DW-LOC.pdf#page=1
The New Leader, April 2, 1932, page 12, reports Pennsylvania Socialist Party petitions demanding pardon of Alfred Hoffman, identified as a Hosiery Workers organizer prosecuted on what the party called a framed conspiracy charge in Monroe County the preceding year. This is a distinct 1931 Pennsylvania prosecution, not the earlier North Carolina conviction reversed in 1930. A pardon demand does not prove a pardon, physical discharge or exact service.
