Biography

Alfred Hassler was an editor and leader of the Fellowship of Reconciliation. His opposition to wartime conscription led to federal imprisonment in 1944–1945. He later published a prison diary and worked against the Vietnam War.

Hassler’s diary entry dated July 6, 1944 describes his arrival at Lewisburg from New York detention and records historical prisoner number 13847-NE. His later entries describe work against segregation and support for other conscientious objectors. This facility transfer does not establish his first day in custody.
