Biography

Alfred Bissell was a young unemployed worker who opened the February 25, 1931 relief demonstration at Grand Rapids City Hall. Bob Fitzgerald’s account in the Daily Worker of March 4, page 4, explicitly describes police and Legionnaires seizing him, struggling to force him into a closed car and bringing him into jail. It reports that officers invited others to kill him. The March 5 issue, page 4, identifies him as a member of the February 10 Washington delegation but does not by itself establish his arrest. The March 4 account resolves that custody question. No individual formal charge, sentence or release date is printed.
