Biography

Alfonso Africa was a MOVE member prosecuted in separate federal and Pennsylvania proceedings. MOVE’s booklet identifies him with Vincent/John Africa in September 1, 1977 federal bomb-making and weapons indictments, May 13, 1981 Rochester arrest and extradition, and July 1981 acquittal on all federal charges. It separately alleges repeated police beatings and a nonfatal shooting during arrests between May and October 1984, reports a five-year sentence on May 8, 1985 for threatening an officer during an earlier arrest, and explicitly states he completed five years and was released in 1990 after refusing a parole condition against association with MOVE. His wife Mary was arrested during a May 13, 1985 raid on their Chester home and their five children were taken away. The sentencing date is not automatically the initial custody day.
