Biography
Alex Danilevich was a strike-committee member in the 1931 Lawrence, Massachusetts textile strike. Police arrested him during the February 26 raid on the National Textile Workers Union headquarters. He was jailed with other strike leaders while the mills sought a return to work. Danilevich, Edith Berkman, Pat Devine, William Murdock and John C. Czarnecki were held under bail totaling $100,000.
The Daily Worker of March 5, 1931, page 2, says Alex Danilevitch and John C. Czarnecki were still held in Lawrence under $20,000 bail each while the ILD and textile union sought a reduction. The application is not an actual release.
The February 27 Lawrence dispatch names this organizer among strike leaders beaten and jailed during the union-headquarters raid as Mayor Landers and the Citizens Committee sought a return-to-work vote. It reports total bail over $100,000 while mass picketing continued. This is contemporaneous strike repression, not a new custody episode separate from the existing February 26 arrest.
