Biography

Belarusian-Jewish-born Chicago lawyer who served as Leon Trotsky's American attorney and represented him at the 1937 Dewey Commission hearings in Mexico City. Originally a CP legal-defense attorney, expelled 1933 for Trotskyism. In the 1941 Minneapolis trial was both chief defense counsel and a defendant; made the closing argument for the SWP. Disbarred after his conviction. 16 months federal prison.
