The spring 2024 encampments led to thousands of arrests and separate university disciplinary proceedings. Criminal charges and campus sanctions followed different processes, and an outcome in one did not necessarily resolve the other.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights’ freedom-of-expression report recorded more than 3,100 detentions or arrests during the protests. That figure covers arrests, not findings of guilt.
Universities also pursued disciplinary cases involving participation in encampments and occupations. Those proceedings could continue independently of a prosecutor’s decision to dismiss criminal charges.
Individual cases require individual records: the charge filed, any detention, the court’s disposition and any separate university decision. A nationwide arrest total does not supply those details.
